The Book of Beggars

The book that taught modern Hebrew prose how to describe poverty without either flinching or sentimentalising. Mendele's own Hebrew of his Yiddish.

The opening

As soon as a warm wind blows and the summer days arrive, and there is light and gladness in the world of the Holy One, blessed be He — days of mourning and fasting and weeping come upon the Jews one after another, from the beginning of the counting of the Omer until the rainy season.

And this is my busy season, mine, Mendele the Bookseller, to make the rounds of the towns within the Pale and supply the children of Israel there with the implements of weeping — that is, lamentations and penitential prayers and all sorts of supplications, ram's horns and festival prayer books, Ma'aneh Lashon and Tefillah Zakkah and the like, all of them good for the shedding of tears.
