Кавказский пленник
A Prisoner of the Caucasus
Zhilin, a Russian officer riding home on leave, is captured by mountain villagers with his fellow officer Kostylin, and plans an escape with the help of a village girl. Tolstoy wrote it in plain Russian for his reading books.
The opening
Полюбится тебе может, и женишься и совсем останешься».
If you take a liking to her, you can marry her, and stay here for good."
Поехать; а если невеста хороша — и жениться можно».
I must go; and if the bride is a good girl, I may marry her."
