What Men Live By

A poor shoemaker brings home a naked stranger he finds by a chapel, and the stranger works for him six years until he has learned three things. A folk tale told in plain words.

The opening

A shoemaker was lodging with his wife and children at the house of a peasant.

He had no house, no land of his own, and supported his family by his shoemaker's trade.
