Judges
Before the kings: twelve leaders, and the years between them.
The opening
וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי מוֹת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּיהוָה לֵאמֹר מִי יַעֲלֶה־לָּנוּ אֶל־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי בַּתְּחִלָּה לְהִלָּחֶם בּֽוֹ׃
It was after the death of Yehoshua, and the Bnei Yisroel inquired of Adonoy, saying: "Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first to wage war against them?"
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה יְהוּדָה יַעֲלֶה הִנֵּה נָתַתִּי אֶת־הָאָרֶץ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃
Adonoy said, "Let Yehudah go up. Behold, I have delivered the land into his hand".
